Week 4 – Catherine’s Story

Faith is Grown One Prayer at a Time
When Catherine arrived at Saint Mary in Middle School, she brought with her memories of a faith she had known as a young child. Her Grandparents faithfully practiced their Catholic faith and shared it with her whenever they could. But as life became busier, her family’s routine changed, and faith became something that belonged more to holidays and family traditions than everyday life. Saint Mary School was the first Catholic school Catherine had ever attended.
At first, it was the little things that caught her attention. Students beginning each day in prayer. Religion class where questions were welcomed. Teachers who spoke naturally about faith, not only during religion classes, but in the way they treated others, offered encouragement, and reminded students that each person is created in the image of God with unique gifts and talents. Day by day, these small moments awakened something in her. She became curious. She began asking questions. She wanted to understand what it meant to be Catholic. She wanted more than the tradition she inherited. She wanted a faith she chose for herself.
With the encouragement of her religion teacher and the support of her family, Catherine began preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation. When the day arrived, she stood with our Grade 6 students and publicly affirmed a faith that had quietly taken root during the months she spent at Saint Mary School. But Catherine’s story didn’t end there.
Her renewed interest in her faith sparked conversations at home. She shared what she was learning with her family. She asked questions. She invited others into those conversations. Little by little, her enthusiasm became a gentle invitation for her family to reconnect with the faith that once had been an important part of their lives.
There was no single moment that changed everything.
There were hundreds of small moments.
A question that was welcomed.
A teacher who listened patiently.
A decade of the Rosary prayed each morning.
A classmate whose faith was contagious.
A school community that gently invited one student to discover that God had been walking beside her all along.
This fall, we will share more of the hundreds of small moments through which faith is nurtured, questions are welcomed, and hearts are drawn closer to God.
We hope you’ll journey with us.
While names and identifying details have been changed to protect the privacy of our students, every story shared in this series reflects authentic experiences within the Saint Mary School community.
