Week 3 – Claire’s Story

Week 3

Confidence Is Built in the Small Moments

When Claire first walked through the doors of Saint Mary School in Kindergarten, she quickly found her place. She made friends. She enjoyed school. She became comfortable in her classroom and connected to the community around her. Saint Mary felt like home.

But there was one thing that didn’t always come easily to Claire:  Speaking in front of others.

As Claire moved through the elementary grades, she encountered moments that gently asked her to step outside her comfort zone. Each one was an opportunity to try something that made her nervous, and to discover that she was capable of more than she thought.

In Grade 3, Claire became an older buddy to a younger student. Suddenly, she wasn’t just thinking about herself. A younger child was looking to her for friendship, encouragement, and an example to follow. She was learning that confidence isn’t about always feeling comfortable. Sometimes, it’s about being willing to step forward when someone else is counting on you.

That same year, Claire began finding her voice in other ways. She had the opportunity to read at school Masses and present at the Grade 3 States Fair. Standing in front of others still made her nervous, but each experience became a little more familiar. One small step. Then another.

By Grade 5, Claire was ready to take a much bigger one. She decided to run for student government. She knew what that meant: standing in front of her classmates and giving a speech. She was nervous. She did it anyway. And she won.

Claire served as her class representative, discovering that the confidence she had been building over the years could be used not just to speak, but to lead.

Looking back, there was no single moment when Claire suddenly became confident.

There were hundreds of small moments.

A classroom where she felt safe enough to try.
A younger student who looked to her as a role model.
A school Mass where she found the courage to speak.
A presentation that pushed her beyond her comfort zone.
A teacher who encouraged her to take the next step.
A fifth-grade speech that once might have seemed impossible.

Each moment built upon the one before it.

Today, Claire is thriving as a freshman in high school. She carries with her not only the academic foundation she gained at Saint Mary School, but the confidence to use her voice, take risks, and step into opportunities – even when they feel a little scary.

Because confidence isn’t built all at once. It is built in the small moments. And sometimes, those small moments give a child the courage to do something they never thought they could.

Claire found her voice in a place that felt like home.

This fall, we will share more of the hundreds of small moments that shape a Saint Mary education—moments when children discover their confidence, find their voice, grow in faith, and learn that they are capable of more than they imagined.

We hope you’ll journey with us.
