Week 2 – Ben’s Story

Every Child Deserves Someone Who Believes in Them

When Ben arrived in Transitional Kindergarten, one thing was immediately clear. He was incredibly bright. He loved to learn. He was full of ideas. He eagerly shared what he knew.

Like many young children, he was also trying to figure out where he fit. As the middle of three siblings, Ben often found himself somewhere in between. His older sister was a model student. His younger brother required extra attention at home. At school, Ben searched for his own place – sometimes speaking before listening, sometimes trying a little too hard to be noticed, and sometimes finding that making friends wasn’t as easy as he had hoped.

His teacher saw something different. She didn’t see a child who needed to be “fixed.” She saw a child with tremendous gifts who simply needed to discover how to use them.

So each morning began with the same message: “We’re going to have a great day.” She celebrated every small success. She noticed every effort. She looked for opportunities to praise not only what Ben accomplished, but who he was becoming. When Ben mastered a new concept, she invited him to help a classmate. When he demonstrated curiosity, she encouraged him to share his ideas. When he made a thoughtful choice, she made sure he knew it mattered.

Little by little, something began to change. Ben discovered that the best way to stand out wasn’t by demanding attention. It was by helping others succeed. His classmates began to see him differently. More importantly, Ben began to see himself differently. He became a mentor in the classroom, eager to encourage younger classmates and proud to be an example for others. The confidence he gained through those everyday moments gave him something every child longs for.

A place to belong.

There was no single moment that changed everything.

There were hundreds of small moments.

A teacher who believed in his potential.

Words of encouragement at the beginning of each day.

Small successes celebrated with genuine joy.

Opportunities to lead.

A classroom where every child’s gifts were recognized, and every effort mattered.

Stories like Ben’s happen every day at Saint Mary School. They don’t make headlines, but they change lives.

This fall, we will share more of the hundreds of small moments that shape a Saint Mary education – moments of faith, growth, belonging, and the people who help make them possible.

We hope you’ll journey with us.

While names and identifying details have been changed to protect the privacy of our students, every story shared in this series reflects authentic experiences within the Saint Mary School community.
