Did you always want to be a teacher?
I have loved teaching for as long as I can remember. I always played school and would help the children I babysat for with their homework. I even taught a neighbor’s child how to ride a bicycle.
When did you join the SMS family?
After taking a hiatus from teaching to raise my children, I was thrilled to learn that SMS had an opening in first grade for a lead teacher! That was in 2001. I’ve enjoyed teaching first grade at SMS ever since then.
What do you enjoy the most about the age you teach?
First graders are amazing! They have so much energy and are so eager to learn. We strive to give them the social, academic and spiritual nourishment they need to blossom. It is so rewarding to see their progress and watch them grow.
Do you have a favorite SMS tradition?
I love the Christmas pageant and concert! It brings the whole SMS community together. It is wonderful to see the entire SMS family gathered together to witness K-2 as they remind us that the true meaning of Christmas is the birth of a very special Baby Boy. Grades 3-8 lend their voices to the celebration as they sing Christmas carols and encourage the audience to join them. The voices of angels can truly be heard on that night.
What do you like to do outside of school?
I love spending time with my family! It is wonderful to have my entire family (including sons-in-law and grandchildren) together and enjoy a good meal and each other’s company! Additionally, my husband and I have begun to take lessons in ballroom dancing! It is a fun way to exercise physically and mentally. The instructors are so talented. And we have met so many wonderful people since we began taking lessons and participating in ballroom dance events.
Do you have a favorite Bible verse or favorite quote?
My favorite Bible verse is from Philippians 1:6. “He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion of the day of Jesus Christ.” It’s a reminder that we are a work in progress. God is with us always and we should not be discouraged. He is faithful and loving!
