When did you join the SMS Family? What ages have you taught at SMS?
I joined SMS in September 2012 and spent several years in PK3, working with Mrs. Betesh and Mrs. Swan. During this period, I was also asked to assist with reading groups for students in Grades 3 and 4. I dedicated many afternoons to working with these students, reading stories, and aiding them in developing their reading skills and confidence. In addition, very often you could find me on the first floor supporting 2nd grade and subbing in many classes when needed. I “graduated” to PK4 almost 10 years ago, and I haven’t looked back! I love my 4’s!!
You implemented Handwriting Without Tears this year. How has that impacted our students?
Handwriting Without Tears has been a wonderful addition to an already strong curriculum. It provides consistent directions in letter formation along with additional hands-on materials. The clearly marked starting point for any letter and the easy-to-trace lines and letters allow students to practice and build confidence. Emphasis is placed on proper letter formation and pencil grip as the children develop their fine motor skills. This approach results in less frustration and more celebration as the children transition from tracing letters to writing them independently.
Do you have a favorite PK4 tradition?
One of the key traditions in PK4 is the Special Person Program, which dedicates a week to celebrating one student and includes a family visit. This program emphasizes that everyone is unique and special. The focus on individuality and being loved is central, not only during this program but throughout the year. The program provides an opportunity for students to develop confidence in speaking before the class, learning how to sit patiently as an audience, and asking questions. The questions range from preferences such as favorite ice cream to interests like favorite sport or dinosaur, ensuring varied and engaging conversations.
Do you have a favorite bible verse or favorite quote?
One of my favorite quotes is, “If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it.” I believe that I am never alone; my faith reassures me that God is always with me, enabling me to handle any situation. My prayers and faith sustain me and have supported me throughout my life. I have so many blessings in my life. I have learned to put my trust in God’s love for me, and I know that with God’s presence, anything is possible.
