Kindergarten Assistant Jean Lombardo with two students

Education:  BA in Business Administration from Baruch College / CUNY

When did you join the SMS Family?

I started in Preschool as a substitute teacher in 2006 and joined full-time in 2007. At the time, preschool was half-day, so we taught PK3s on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, PK4s on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, and TK every afternoon. In 2009, I moved to TK assistant full-time and made the switch to Kindergarten Assistant in 2014.

What is your favorite part of the school day?

I love the mornings, first thing!  Kindergarteners come in excited and enthusiastic every day.  Their energy level is high, and they are ready to start learning.

Do you have a favorite Kindergarten tradition or activity?

Yes!  I love our daily school day count.  We count up to the 100th day of school, and then backward the last 80 days of school.  Each day we move a new stick to the “ones” pocket, and when there are 10, we bundle and move them to the “tens” pocket. The kids are practicing so many critical math concepts without even realizing it!

My second favorite is the annual Field Day.  There is such camaraderie shown that day.  The Kindergarteners grow and develop so much throughout the year, and it is so evident on Field Day.

What role has sports played in your life?

I am the mom of three grown sons.  Sports was a huge part of their lives while growing up.  One played basketball and volleyball, one was a swimmer, and one played football and basketball.  I loved every minute of cheering them on.  For many years, you were most likely to find my husband and me in a gym, on the bleachers, or at the pool supporting our boys and their teammates.

Do you have a favorite bible verse?

Yes, Luke 6:31.  “Do unto others as you would have them do to you.”  Perfect for Kindergarten and beyond!
