Director of Mission Advancement Amy Dowding

Education:  BA in American Studies/Sociology from Fairfield University

When did you join the SMS Family?

I joined as a parent in 2005 when my oldest child started preschool.  I joined the staff in 2011 in a new role as Advancement Coordinator.  That job has evolved, and several years ago it was renamed Director of Mission Advancement.  I am the parent of three SMS alums, Dennis ’16, Jonathon ’18, and Elizabeth ’20.

What does Mission Advancement include?

At its heart, my role is about sharing the story of Saint Mary School with all of our community members. I oversee enrollment management, communications, marketing, fundraising, donor, alumni, and community relations, and strategic planning. It’s a full plate, but I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to give back to a school that has meant so much to me and my family.

Do you have a favorite Saint Mary School event or tradition?

This is so hard to answer.  The Christmas Pageant, May Crowning, Capstone, and Benediction Dinner immediately come to mind, but if I had to choose just one, I think it would be the annual Middle School vs. Alumni Basketball Game during Catholic Schools Week!  Our alumni are such an important part of our community, and the lifelong friendships formed here are so precious.

Why is community so important to you?

I grew up in a military family and moved 20 times.  My family is very close, and we had some amazing experiences, but I always longed to be a part of a more permanent community. I went to 5 schools between Kindergarten and 8th grade, and three high schools. I wanted a different experience for my children, and we found what I was looking for at Saint Mary School.

Do you have a favorite bible verse?

Yes, Psalm 46:10 – “Be still, and know that I am God.”  I need a daily reminder to seek time for quiet reflection, and to try to let go and surrender to God’s will.
